5 Tips for a Successful Detox

Summer is slowly coming to an end and our bodies are recovering from the summer BBQ’s, parties, and holiday vacations. What better time to detox then right now? Fall is right around the corner and a whole other round of feasting and holidays is around the corner. Detoxing is beneficial for giving your body a break and helping it renew and cleanse itself of toxins and inflammation.

After detoxing you may experience extreme levels of energy, eliminate your cravings, reduce bloating, and have a higher awareness of healthy habits. Your mind is clearer and your mood skyrockets.

Now who wouldn’t want any of that?

Here are 5 tips for a successful detox:

1. Eat whole foods

When detoxing one of the most important things is eating whole foods. This means staying away and eliminating foods that have barcodes and come in a package. Also, stick to organic fruits and veggies for your detox and use the dirty dozen list as a guide. You don’t want to add any toxins into your body during your detox!

2. Add glorious greens

Adding greens can help the body become more alkaline and balance acidity in our bodies. Late summer/early fall greens consist of swiss chard, arugula, collards, kale, and spinach. On top of helping your body achieve balance, greens also provide many vitamins and minerals.

3. Eliminate as much soy, dairy, eggs, fish, shellfish, gluten, and nuts as possible

These foods are the top allergens and are best eliminated while you are doing a detox. Many people are unaware of their intolerance to these foods. Some symptoms may include indigestion, heartburn, nausea, cramps, headaches, and fatigue. So try to keep things as clean as possible for best detox results.

4. Get movin’

Incorporating exercise any day improves energy levels, circulation, and metabolism. This is why exercise is an important key to detoxing. Try gentle yoga, taking daily walks, stretching, and other low impact activities. Doing too much exercise during detoxing can drain your energy. So try to stay clear of really high-intensity workouts while doing any detox.

5. Make time for meditation and quiet time

Why are you detoxing? Do you want to feel better, have more energy, or is it part of your self-care? Whatever the reason, your choice to detox is for YOU. So try sitting still for at least 10 minutes a day, breathing in and out. I love using the app Headspace. It leads you through meditation and is great for beginners.

Detoxes are good too do every couple of months. We don’t realize all the junk we put into our bodies and it can really disturb body functions. What kind of detox are you looking to do? I’ve done a juicing one and man was it tough. haha

I need to do this. I need to be more conscious of what I am eating and putting into my body. Once my asthma settles down a bit I need to start exercising, pretty much down for the count right now. I get tired and out of breath just brushing my hair!
