DIY Boho Cat Feather Toy + Giving Icarus His Furever Home

As a child I alway had pets around. I had dogs, cats, birds, bunnies, and even little hamsters. I can’t recall one period of time without a pet and I loved each an every one of them. As I got older and went out on own I didn’t have the time to give to a pet so I was petless for many years. Then one day I got a little surprise on my birthday. A surprise I didn’t ask for…

My boyfriend at the time had gotten me a cat for my birthday. It was a surprise…except that I had to drive an hour to pick him up, pay the adoption fees and take care of him (you see why that relationship didn’t work out haha). I agreed to go pick up the cat and I’m so glad I did.

I made the hour drive to Animal Friends of the Valley Shelter and instantly fell in love when I saw Icarus for the first time. He was the cutest grey tabby kitten and so vocal. The woman at the shelter told me that Icarus had been found without his parents and siblings when he was 1-month old. This made me so sad but happy at the same time. I was giving him his furever home.

Now 5 years later he is still so affectionate and vocal as ever! I’m so happy I could give him a home that he deserves.

I’m also happy to help support Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® Furever Home™ this October. Rachael Ray™ Nutrish® Furever Home™ is all about Helping Shelter Pets Find The Home They Deserve. Nutrish is donating $250,000 during the month of October to help shelter pets in need. The cash donation will be made in equal amounts to 3 organizations: 1) Big Dog Ranch 2) ASPCA 3) North Shore Animal League.

You can participate too by purchasing any Nutrish-only product during the Sweepstakes Period (10/1/17 at 12:00:00 a.m. ET and ends on 10/31/17 at 11:59:59 p.m. ET) and registering your purchase to enter the sweepstakes

On top of the great tasting food made with wholesome ingredients (Icarus approved), I love that Rachael Ray gives back to pet charities and organizations. Through September 2017, Rachael’s Rescue® has donated more than $21 million dollars to pet charities and other organizations that do good for animals. To support Furever Home™ I picked up Nutrish dry and wet cat food at my local Target. This simple purchase will help animals in need and also give your pet delicious food safely USA cooked with the world’s best ingredients.

Now I have a fun and easy DIY that you can make for your kitty.

DIY BOHO CAT FEATHER TOY

what you need

  • Wooden Dowel
  • Glue Gun
  • Feathers
  • Assorted Ribbon
  • Twine

putting it together

NO. 1 GATHER RIBBONS TOGETHER

I cut my ribbons 20″ long. I used 3 colored ribbon pieces and 3 assorted neutral colored ribbon strips. Total of 6.

NO. 2 TIE ALL THE RIBBONS TOGETHER

NO. 3 GLUE FEATHERS TO THE COLORED RIBBON PIECES

Glue the quill part of the feather to your ribbon with hot glue. Let it dry completely and then add another feather. I added a total of 3 feathers but you can add as many as you want.

NO. 4 WRAP FEATHERS WITH TWINE

Once your feathers are glued to your ribbon, wrap it with a small piece of twine adding glue as you go.

NO. 5. GLUE ENDS OF RIBBON BUNCH TO THE WOODEN DOWEL.

Glue the ends of the ribbon exposed before your knot to the wooden dowel. Make sure all the pieces get glued down. Wait to glue the knot! We will glue it at the end.

NO. 6 GLUE AND WRAP TWINE AROUND DOWEL.

Start gluing twine around dowel just before your ribbon pieces. Add glue as you go and keep it tight. You will want to wrap the twine around the ends of the ribbon to hide them. Once you get to the top of the dowel stop.

NO. 7 GLUE KNOT TO TOP OF DOWEL.

Now we can glue the knot down to the top of the dowel and then finish the final wrap with twine. Cut wine and glue the end in place.

Your cat is so cute and love the DIY toy! One of the last weddings we went to had ribbon streamers kind of like this as a send-off thing and as a favor, and my cats loved them as toys!
