Oh propagation, you beautiful thing you! Seriously it’s amazing how I can rip off a leaf from a succulent and it will start to grow all on its own. Well not that simple but pretty darn close! I am a killer of most plants but drought resistance plants were made for me! Today I’m going to show you how to easily propagate succulents on your own which will save you $$ over time.
How to Propagate Succulents
So you have a couple of succulents that are getting too tall and starting to lean like a cholo. DO NOT TOSS! It’s time to pluck, spray, and repeat. 🙂
STEP 1: Pluck Off Leaves
Pick off a couple of layers of leaves from the succulent. You should feel like you have too many because not all of them will propagate.
The more you have, the more chances you will get to having new baby succulents.
I left only one layer of leaves on my parent succulents so that when I replanted them, they would be short again.
STEP 2: Lay them Out
Find a container of some sort to fill with succulent soil. I used a wooden basket that I had lying around.
“You know just something I had lying around”–>Name that movie and we will be friends forever!
This can be a Tupperware container, small cardboard box, or anything where this little babies can lay in peace.
Fill up the container with a layer of succulent soil so that when you water them, there will be moisture around. This allows the roots to branch out and look for nutrients and water.
Step 3: Spray and Watch them Grow
Now that you have them laid out are ready to grow, you’ll want to spray them. A light mist every couple of days is the perfect amount.
You don’t want to drown them in water because they won’t grow.
Over the next week or so you will see the magic happen and little baby succulents will start to grow. If you don’t see growth right away, just be patient because things like this take a some time.
So this is what the should look like after they’ve grown a little. Aren’t they the cutest?
Step 4: Pluck and replant!
Now all you have to do next is pluck them oh so very gently and replant them. I used small little glass jars to plant them into for the time being.
You can also get some affordable cute succulent pots for fairly cheap.
Here are some of my favorites:
And just like that you have new succulents to add to your collection. So easy right?
